This brilliant directorial debut from actress Sarah Polley, who also wrote the script, is the story of a marriage of 44 years that changes utterly when Fiona, played by Christie, succumbs to the ravages of Alzheimer's and has to be put in a retirement home. Set in the snowy wastes of Canada and seen through the eyes of Fiona's husband, Grant, the story begins when Fiona puts pressure on him to put her in a home as she realises the progressive nature of her condition. During the month they spend apart for her to settle in, she forms an attachment to a wheelchair bound resident, Aubrey, much to the dismay of Grant who wonders whether she may be punishing him for a past indiscretion. Melancholy though this film may be in its examination of the nature of dementia, memory and the power of love it has its moments of hilarity and treats a serious subject in a balanced and highly watchable manner. Christie is stunning in the role of Fiona and was nominated for Best Actress at this year's Oscars, as well as winning many awards including a Golden Globe and the London Critics Circle Film Award for Best Actress.
