Jacob is a sullen Danish expatriate working in an impoverished orphanage in Mumbai who leaves his adopted family including the boy he has brought up from birth and reluctantly returns to Denmark, enticed by an investment offer from a wealthy and reputedly philanthropic businessman, Jørgen. On attending the wedding of Jørgen's daughter Anne, Jacob is shocked to find that not only is Jørgen's wife an old flame of his but that she was pregnant with Anne when she left him in India twenty years previously. Uncomfortable revelations come thick and fast from this point onwards, there is much squirming and heart searching all round as relationships are redefined and old questions answered and as the film progresses Jørgen's motives for orchestrating events become apparent. The director, schooled in the Dogme tradition, uses composition and sharp editing to convey the intensity of her characters and the acting, particularly the portrayal of the difficult relationship between the two male protagonists, is superb. Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the Oscars in 2007
