A little girl
and her mother go to live with the woman's husband, an evil fascist tracking
down left-wing guerrillas in Spain in June 1944, as the Allies invade Normandy. Ophelia hates
her stepfather and seeks solace in fairy tales and exploring the mysterious
forest that surrounds the old mill that is her new home. One day she meets a large insect who becomes
a fairy and leads her underground where she enters a surreal and allegorical
world ruled by the god Pan, who gives her three tasks to perform. This highly acclaimed, visually stunning,
intelligent and thought-provoking film contrasts the bleak and brutal world of
the time with the strange gothic fantasy land of a little girl's imagination
and won Oscars in 2007 for make-up, cinematography and art direction.
