Director: Pedro Almodovar 121 mins  Spain  2006    15
 Starring: Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura
volver The Cannes jury awarded the Best Actress Award for 2006 to the entire female cast of this funny and moving tale of a group of Spanish women that the director himself has described as a cross between 'Arsenic and Old Lace' and 'Mildred Pierce'.  Raimunda lives in Madrid with her daughter and drunken husband.  When her daughter kills her step-father, Raimunda finds herself covering up for her husband's murder.  Her parents died in a tragic fire years previously but her mother returns as a ghost to take care of unfinished business.  'Volver' means 'coming back' and this is a film about the return of the dead, the re-emergence of long-buried secrets, custom and superstition as well as about the complicated relationships within a group of women related by love, blood or duty.

A witty and colourful gem from the director of 'All About My Mother'.

"No other director has as much swoon factor as Almodóvar: the sensual texture of his movie-making is unique. Volver could have gone on for another hour or two: there seemed so much more to say. It is another resounding success for a director who just gets better and better." Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
