Based on a short story by Conrad, 'The Return', and set in
Paris
before the First World War, this is the tale of the marriage between a self-absorbed and complacent businessman and his clever and beautiful wife who runs a literary salon. Jean receives a letter from Gabrielle saying that she is leaving him for another man. She then returns to try to save the remnants of their marriage. The film brilliantly portrays the internal dialogue of two very separate people in a marriage in crisis who are unable to bridge the chilly gap between them. Excellent performances in this visually interesting, unusual and intimate picture of a relationship. |
