The director of this film won the Jury Prize at

/place>/city>in 2005 for this tale set in the 80s in the Guizhou Province of China. In the 1960s the Chinese government relocated factories and workers inland to form a ‘third front’ and many of them ended up in small towns separated from their families in the cities. Lao Wu is one such worker who wishes to return to
Shanghai
/place>/city>with his daughter Qinghong but is prevented from doing so by his boss. His resentment and frustration builds and he takes it out on his daughter by trying to prevent her from seeing a local boy and attempting to break her ties to the place in which she grew up, believing that she should live in
Shanghai
/place>/city>and follow his dream. A comment on the consequences of the relocation policy, this film also deals with generational conflicts and adolescent rebellion but most especially provides a fascinating snapshot of the culture of small-town
China
