Pierrepoint, a grocery delivery man, follows his father into the trade in the early 50s and executes his duties with pride, precision and humanity, quickly rising to a position of huge responsibility and respect. For many years he maintains his conviction that his occupation is about minimising suffering by exercising efficiency and he goes home at night to his cosy home and his wife with a clear conscience. However when he is commissioned by Monty to execute war criminals, with the attendant fame and notoriety, he begins to question his own morality and as the tide turns against capital punishment in the 50s his doubts increase and his conscience begins to trouble him. Atmospheric, emotionally powerful and not to be missed. |
